Magik Theatre ‘s Story About Red Riding Hood You’ve Never Heard
Magik Theatre Brings a Fast, Funny, Family Friendly Take on the Classic Tale of Red Riding Hood
Magik Theatre ’s Howlingly Hilarious, Deliciously Fresh Red Riding Hood
Once upon a time, there was a little girl and a big, bad wolf, but make the girl a feisty delivery driver and make the wolf’s scariest quality his ego, and you have Magik Theatre’s howlingly hilarious, deliciously fresh Red Riding Hood, opening on Saturday, September 27. When Wolfgang, the “greatest actor in the world,” sets out to perform his one-man version of the Red Riding Hood tale, he’s interrupted by a girl with a mysterious package and plenty of opinions about how the story should go. Together, they jump into playwright Allison Gregory’s clever and energetic retelling of the classic fairy tale, playing every role and discovering unexpected surprises along the way. Recommended for family audiences ages 5 and up, Red Riding Hood celebrates courage, bravery and the strength that comes from working together.
Far from the frightening, Grandma-eating monster of the original tale, this wolf just wants to deliver a great performance, and his not-so-welcome addition to the cast has notes. But through the girl’s eyes, Wolfgang begins to see and appreciate ideas that had never occurred to him, transforming everyday objects into props and costumes that build a beautiful fairy tale world. “The actors are not just playing roles—they’re inventing them with what’s around them, which brings a spontaneity and theatrical wonder that feels true to the spirit of Magik,” says director Devon Moreno. While this is Moreno’s directorial debut with Magik Theatre, Red Riding Hood seems tailor-made for the longtime Magik actor and production manager, who assisted in directing two Magik productions last season. His expertise in prop wrangling and quick costume changes will literally be reflected on the stage as Wolfgang and the girl transform into each character before the audience’s eyes. “At the heart of it, we’ve approached the show like a shared adventure—for the actors and the audience,” says Moreno, hinting at Red Riding Hood’s fast-paced and interactive vibe.
KEEP THE MAGIK ALIVE FOR THE REST OF 2025
Don’t hesitate to snap up tickets to Red Riding Hood, the whimsical wolf story is only on the Main Stage through October 12, 2025. After that, the only way to catch Wolfgang in action is through seeing a Magik on the Road touring performance in the fall or spring. Not just available to schools, Magik’s touring shows can be produced indoors or outdoors for any group seeking out family-friendly entertainment to enhance their event or programming. Theatre-lovers will want to see Red Riding Hood onstage at Beethoven Hall, one of the last performances before the iconic building closes for a months-long makeover in early 2026. Before the building takes its final bow for 2025, however, Magik will ring in the holidays with a stage adaptation of beloved television classic A Charlie Brown Christmas. And for less than $50, patrons can receive a special, two-show package to both productions.
Another way to support the beloved children’s theatre is at their annual A Night of Magik fundraising gala. On September 20, the theatre goes Hollywood glam to raise money to cover costs associated with the short season and the continued impact of the South Alamo Street construction project. Guests will have their very own red carpet experience before noshing on Hollywood-inspired fare and sipping celeb-worthy cocktails while San Antonio’s brightest stars entertain with live, exclusive performances. RSVP for the VIP party online or simply support Magik’s campaign to raise $300,000 with a financial donation today.
For family fun this fall, Red Riding Hood fits the bill. As always, Magik Theatre is committed to making theatre arts accessible for everyone with sensory-friendly and ASL-interpreted performances, plus sensory-inclusive facilities.
