The Little Mermaid Dives Into the Majestic Theatre May 16 & 17
The Little Mermaid is Making a Splash at the Majestic Theatre as the Children’s Ballet of San Antonio Heads “Under the Sea”
The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio invites guests on a spellbinding adventure under the sea with a refreshing take on The Little Mermaid. On May 16 and 17, nearly 200 of San Antonio’s finest young performers will transform downtown’s Majestic Theatre into Ariel’s enchanting, watery world, a visual extravaganza that combines stunning sets with exceptional performances from the region’s next big dancers, singers, actors, and even acrobats! Inspired by the beloved DisneyTM musical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s famous story, this dynamic, 90-minute production will dazzle audiences of all ages. It also makes a fantastic gift experience for musical- and dance-loving mamas and grads (hint, hint).
Continuing its nationally-recognized commitment to provide young performers with professional-level stage experience, CBSA’s The Little Mermaid features choreography from award-winning masters like Ballet Austin’s Jennifer Hart, music video maven Isabella Grosso, and Kazakhstan’s Nurlan Kinerbayev. Kinerbayev, a visiting ballet master and principal artist from CBSA’s associated school the Dance Center of San Antonio, will perform on Friday night and Saturday’s matinee. Joining him onstage is Aliaksandra Krukava, also a ballet master with the Dance Center, whose international career includes principal roles at the Russian National Ballet. For the Saturday evening performance, San Antonio’s own Sophia Leune, an up-and-coming star from North East ISD’s lauded School of the Arts, will perform.
Audiences will feel fully immersed “under the sea” thanks to captivating sets and a treasure trove of special effects combining digital imagery, inventive stage design, and even a real pool. Gravity-defying aerial acrobats seem to float in water as they fly through the air, with mesmerizing waves all around. Audience members are invited to sing along and be a “part of their world” as live musicians and singers perform renditions of hit songs from the animated classic. The fast-paced spectacular will entertain fans young and old with its mix of classical and modern choreography, amazing acrobatics, and Broadway-calibre musical numbers.
A Gift for the Whole Family
Whether celebrating Mother’s Day a bit late, or theatre-loving graduates early, a day out to The Little Mermaid is a delightful way to spend time with the family. The Majestic Theatre, San Antonio’s iconic jewelbox theatre in the heart of Downtown, is a truly special setting, enhanced by a fun-filled, pre-show market in the lobby. Get there early to browse mermaid-themed merchandise, enjoy face painting, and take photos with the cast. True fans and costume-lovers are encouraged to dress up in their favorite sea-worthy attire, mermaid tails, and princess frocks.
Tickets to The Little Mermaid are truly the gift that keeps on giving, as proceeds support CBSA’s civic altruism. To date, the company and the affiliated Dance Center of San Antonio has provided life-changing educational and performance opportunities to nearly 2,500 young dancers from South and Central Texas, performed for more than 35,000 Title I schoolchildren and 2,000 underserved community members affiliated with Bexar County youth and family service organizations, and awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to special needs, boys’ dance, and financial needs-based students.
Magic Meets Mastery
Since its founding 10 years ago, the Children’s Ballet of San Antonio has been on the vanguard of youth performing arts, combining a passion for diversity and accessibility with professional artistic standards to provide award-winning dance instruction (through the Dance Center of San Antonio) and productions of the highest caliber that include roles for children as young as three years old and modified opportunities for performers of all abilities. CBSA performers and Dance Center students have studied with acclaimed Master Ballet Teachers and the most talented local choreographers, won numerous international awards, and accepted scholarships to prestigious ballet institutions like the Royal Ballet School in London, the Bolshoi Ballet in Russia, and the School of American Ballet in New York City, to name a few. CBSA Founder and Prima Ballerina Vanessa Bessler is a 10-time consecutive winner of Youth America Grand Prix’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year, an acknowledgment of her dedication to finding and cultivating young, local talent. The Dance Center was recently recognized as among the top 2.5 percent of ballet institutions in the nation. The resulting performances—which include not just traditional ballet but multidisciplinary Broadway-style musicals—are heartwarming in their inclusivity and jaw-dropping in their production value, aligning with Bessler’s belief that “the arts are for everyone.”
