Magik Theatre Announces New Season + Renovations + Believe In Magik Campaign
Magik Theater’s 2025-26 Season Celebrates Resilience & Connection Ahead of Transformational Renovations
Magik Theatre announces a special, abbreviated 31st 2025-26 season featuring two heartwarming and hilarious mainstage productions before temporarily closing for long-awaited renovations. Hurry to nab a discounted two-show package to enjoy a clever twist on Red Riding Hood and a live version of the beloved A Charlie Brown Christmas animated television special from San Antonio’s premier theatre for young audiences. While the mainstage takes a brief intermission in early 2026, Magik on the Road will continue to bring high-quality theatre to schools, libraries and community centers all over San Antonio and beyond. This season’s touring productions include the feisty Red Riding Hood, as well as fan-favorites Dragons Love Tacos and Tomás and the Library Lady. “Whether in the theatre or the classroom, this season is about connection, creativity and the joy of discovering who you are—and who you might become,” says Managing Director Mel Zarb-Cousin.
Coming Soon: An Even Better Magik Theatre Experience
Thanks to a 2022 bond and private funding from the Joan and Herb Kelleher Charitable Foundation and the Charity Ball Association, Magik Theatre’s iconic home in Beethoven Hall will receive a $2.2 million makeover in early 2026, necessitating a shortened season but promising a much-improved theater, just in time for an even cooler summer experience. The upgrades will build on Magik’s commitment to equitable theatre access—which already includes ASL-interpreted performances and a sensory-inclusive certification from KultureCity—and improve entrances and seating for guests with mobility challenges. And all audience members will benefit from brand-new HVAC systems and custom-made theater seats, as well as electrical and safety systems enhancements. These renovations will make Magik Theatre even more comfortable and welcoming for all patrons, and audiences are expected to enjoy the benefits as soon as summer 2026, with exciting plans in the works for day camps and a special seasonal production.
Help Magik Theatre Stay Strong
With renovations impacting operations, Magik Theatre, a pillar in the performing arts community since 1994, needs its fans now more than ever. The City’s long-delayed South Alamo Street construction project has created a tangle of roadwork just outside Magik’s theatre, sowing confusion and discouraging visitors despite ample parking within easy walking distance. As a result, the theatre is already experiencing a downturn in ticket sales that directly correlates to that construction project. The revenue earned from ticket sales funds Magik’s celebrated education and outreach programs that promote literacy, creativity and self-expression. To help cover the current $300,000 budget shortfall and projected reduction in audiences due to the upcoming short season, the nonprofit has launched its Believe in Magik Campaign, with every dollar donated matched (up to $3,000) by SKYE MEP, to keep programs for Title I schools and ensure steady employment for Magik Theatre’s beloved local casts and crews.
Social butterflies should mark their calendars for September 20, 2025, when Magik goes Hollywood for its annual fundraiser gala. A Night of Magik in Hollywood gives guests the star-treatment with a real-life red carpet to pose on, a curated menu of cinema-inspired sips and cuisine, dazzling live entertainment and spectacular surprises. A-listers will want to sign on for sponsorship and VIP packages (that include access to a special speakeasy) and rising stars can still soak up the spotlight with individual tickets. Sponsorship and ticketing information can be found here.
Apart from donating and dancing the night away, Magik’s community can continue to support the San Antonio institution by purchasing two-show subscriptions for the 2025-26 season. There are a limited number of these packages, which include reserved tickets to both mainstage productions for a 20 percent discount as well as priority access to updates and special events throughout the season. To avoid construction hassles on South Alamo, theatregoers are encouraged to park in the nearby, multilevel Hemisfair Garage and enjoy a pleasant walk through Hemisfair’s urban oasis on their way to the show. And a friendly reminder that though Magik’s curtain may be temporarily closed in early 2026, the (road)show must go on! Schools and community organizations can still bring Magik’s touring productions to their preferred venues, with educational perks like TEKS-based digital resource guides and workshops led by Magik’s teaching artists.
“There is no doubt Magik Theatre is worthy of continued investment to ensure this treasure continues to entertain future generations of youth in the heart of our downtown,” says Centro San Antonio President and CEO Trish DeBerry.
As always, Magik seeks to serve ALL children with Sensory-Friendly, Pay What You Wish and American Sign Language Interpreted performances for each mainstage production. These measures are in place to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where children can develop a life-long love of theatre and believe in the wonder of Magik.
